Membership
Any member of College may become a member of the music society, allowing them use of the Music Room on Central Site and both the David Sheppard Room and Old Porters' Lodge at Wychfield for music practice. To become a member, get in touch with Graham Webb (gtw22). Tell him your name, e-mail address, what year you are in and which instrument(s) you play. Membership is £5 per year. The college has several pianos available to practice on: a Kawai grand in the Music Room, and an upright in The David Sheppard Room at Wycifield. There is also a Steinway grand piano in the Master’s Lodge, which is used for professional concerts, and it is available to the more accomplished student pianists for practice. Anyone seeking permission to play it should contact Andrew Arthur (aa373).
Recitals
THMS has a series of evening recitals that take place after formal on Sundays. Details of upcoming recitals can be found on the events page. If any member of college wishes to give a recital, they should contact the Recital Co-ordinators (thms-recitals@srcf.net). Occasionally, THMS also has a recital in hall, the SCR (Senior Combination Room) or the Master’s Lodge, featuring a professional soloist. Again, details can be found on the events page.
Concerts
Once a year THMS organises an orchestra formed from musicians within college. There are usually a few evening rehearsals followed by a concert in the Dining Hall. This year's concert will be on 23rd January 2010.
The 2009 orchestra was conducted by Tom Wraith, and played Strauss' Radetzky March and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C major with Freddie Parker as soloist. The concert also included performances by a string quartet and wind quintet.
If you are interested in playing in the orchestra, email us with your name, instrument and standard.
Booking the Music Room
Members of THMS are requested to book the Music Room via the online booking system, which can be found here. Raven authentication is required, and all users must first be approved by the webmaster. Existing Music Society members will be approved automatically; any new members are requested to e-mail gtw22 for approval. All Music Room users are reminded that the room may not be used for more than two hours a day by one person or group, and THMS reserve the right to cancel any bookings that contravene the rules.
